Outsiders Division

By Jaume Vidiella 03.01.13

Since arriving in Barcelona to complete his studies in Fine Arts David Méndez Alonso, better known as MisterTheFreak, has barely stopped for breath, exhibiting his work and bringing colour back to the city’s landscape. He’s one of those hyperactive and multidisciplinary types always looking for a new challenge to extend himself.

Self defined as a plastic artist he has turned his back on any conventional stereotyping as one can clearly work out from the name of his clothes Outsiders Division. David has always known where his inspiration lies and started looking at the world of comics early on. Authors like Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns and Peter Bagge with their mythical works 'Ghost World', 'Black Hole', and 'Hate', which were huge back in the 90s; acidic portraits of a society in at a time when 'losers' started to make their voice heard.

With these references it might be expected that David’s world view is a dark and pessimist one but nothing could be further from the truth. Always good humoured, dressed like a modern dandy, optimistic and lacking in histrionics one of his main obsessions is his collection of eclectic objects: toys, trophies, cheap sculptures, pencils, day to day things that he brings together in original compositions in bright colours and patterns mixing different formats, David is as comfortable using paper as with graffiti using other modes of expression.

Always as much interested in the concept as the crafting of the work itself, the first pieces came about using hand sewn objects ‘cosplays/alter egos’  used to make the dresses. That’s where the idea of producing his own collection first came, in collaboration with his colleague inspired by one of his favourite articles of clothing, the hat. Carefully made by hand using the best fabrics the hats are made in limited series consisting of 40 per model with new ones added every few months. The collection has been widened to include accessories all based on the idea of combining colours, prints and embroidered hems; a way of extending and promoting a very personal iconography.
