Maians

Special Leather Collection

14.12.16

Maians was founded in La Barceloneta in 2008. The brand which is inspired by this very same neighbourhood, which was originally an island known as Maians located off the coast of Barcelona before it was joined to the peninsula, was created by three individuals all from different parts of the world; Chad (San Francisco), Nete (Girona) and Alfonso (Valladolid), with the same objective: to rediscover the original methods and moulds of the Spanish shoemaking tradition of the 40s and 60s, and make them relevant again. Crafted detail combined with the urban style: this is the Maians formula.

And so the first of its creations, Sisto, came into being: a handmade shoe with a rubberized sole made of natural rubber with a woven finish, using typical local fabrics like cotton and suede. The rubber process involves dipping chips of the material into a mould and with the help of a last the upper part of the shoe is connected to the rubber, which becomes the sole. It is a unique way of manufacturing shoes and there are very few factories still using this technique for making footwear.

Since its foundation Maians has worked with “the incredible craftsmen of La Rioja who have already become like family,” learning from them and launching new models with each successive collection, models like Calisto, Pepa, Inés and Rufino. Until one day when they came up with a new idea: “What if we were to make a new pair using only leather?” Alfonso, Maians’ head designer started to research possible manufacturers for this shoe till he came up with a new factory in Aragon. León, Mauro and Silvio are the three new resulting models that came about thanks to his 40 years experience and detailed know-how, together with the creativity of the Maians team.

This new line follows the same criteria as with Made in Spain, The Sole Revival and Barceloneta Lifestyle, that is to say using 100% cowhide leather sourced from the Pyrenees around Gerona. The climate of this North Western region lends the leather a greater durability, capable of breathing with incomparable comfort. The soles are made from a thermo-plastic material which is very resistant, flexible and light.
