El Film a l’Agulla; Fashion & Film

By Cristina Scotti 07.12.12

The relationship between cinema and fashion is the theme of the exhibition ‘El Film a l’Agulla’ (word play in Catalan to do with needle work and film) hosted by the Filmoteca in collaboration with the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), Raffel Pages Hairdressers, cinema wardrobe designer Ariadna Papió and Sastrería Cornejo.

The exhibition underlines the relationship between film character and clothing and reflects real life in that our wardrobe choices define us as individuals in many ways. The stars of this initiative however are the IED students of the Masters course in fashion design who through their thesis presentations have re-imagined those iconic figures from the history of cinema who have defined fashion and style over the years. The exhibition also includes curious accessories made from celluloid, entrance tickets, paper programmes and other film related miscellanea on display in glass cases; necklaces and diadems made from celluloid, bags made from metal cans and ear rings featuring mythical cinematic images. A fanzine produced by IED students of graphic design has also been provided for the occasion which is also inspired by this cultural phenomenon.

From December 4th through to March 2013 all the works will be on view at the Filmoteca exhibition space (basement level), more than 30 films are to be screened which prove the maxim made famous by avant-garde designer Coco Chanel, “Fashions come and go; style is forever.”
