ASVOFF

A shaded view on fashion film

By José Serrano 16.01.12

Between the 24th and 27th of January the ASVOFF will be taking place in Barcelona, the festival of fashion in cinema created by the journalist and fashion critic Diane Pernet, an un-missable date on the city’s fashion calendar ever since adopting this title back in 2008 (previously the festival was known as You Wear It Well). ASVOFF is celebrated yearly in the Pompidou Centre of Paris and later as a travelling festival visiting cities like New York, Tokyo, Mexico, Moscow, Milan, Cannes and London. Diane Pernet, one of the pioneers in the making of fashion documentaries once again returns to take charge of this festival dedicated to the moving fashion image and emerging trends. ASVOFF is structured around an official section, with a selection commissioned by Diane Pernet of the best short films presented in previous editions and a competitive section under three separate categories: Official, Students and Mobiles. For the official competitive section there is a jury made up of international experts from the world of fashion and cinema, the participants compete for four prizes that recognise the best shorts made by professionals (best film, best design, best actor and best sound track), while the student section is decided on by a popular vote (it only awards the best film). The theme for the official competition is 'the muse', and for the student category 'to amuse'. The Barcelona edition will be presenting a new Mobile Film section that will award the best film submitted using a mobile phone.  Among the best short films submitted for previous editions chosen by Diane Pernet will be films like 'The Tales of Miss X' starring Kate Moss and a documentary about Vivienne Westwood, both directed by Mike Figgis or the out-of-competition unreleased documentary 'Hermès: les mains d’Hermès'. Fashion expert Charo Mora will present 'Narraciones', another out-of-competition documentary that records the visual aspects of the Barcelona school of fashion through unreleased or little known documentaries. With its innovative character the ASVOFF festival is increasingly becoming more consolidated through its multiple platforms which continue to explore the infinite possible readings of the world of fashion and its images.
