Velissima, Italian eatery
La Dolce Vita of La Barceloneta
It’s not often that a new site for a restaurant is created where before there was nothing. This is however the context within which Velissima is situated in the Marina Vela (at the foot of the W Hotel). A location that is genuinely unique in Barcelona, almost entirely surrounded by the Mediterranean, an extension to the port. A restaurant and cocktail bar with a huge covered terrace to enjoy all year round. There is definitely a gap in the culinary scene for a restaurant like Velissima managed by the Marinelli family with gastronomic Italian cuisine and superior service, glamour and fine dining combined. Worth going out of your way to discover its particular delights.
The cuisine and the ambience here are inspired by the Italian Dolce Vita of the 1950s, one that evokes the hedonism and joie de vivre of the classic Fellini film starring Marcello Mastroianni and Anna Ekberg. But Velissima is however an experience in full living technicolor, a celebration for the visual and other senses. The menu is inspired by and structured around its location (on the Mediterranean) with headings such as the Frutti di Mare Crudi (seafood and fish), and Frutti del’Orto Crudi (crudités and fish), Gliantipasti (with a selection of pasta starters), Burrata (a wide ranging selection) as well as a wide range of first and second courses. And desserts including Italian favourites like Tiramisú, Panacotta and Baba – almost worth a visit alone to sample for sugar addicts.

The interior design project is by Lázaro Rosa -Violán who was inspired by the Amalfi coast to create an interior and exterior that combines tratidion and contemporary elements.

Andrea, the Maitre d’ is the ideal person to guide diners through Velissima’s tantalising menu. All the classic Italian dishes are present but the star of the culinary fare is the seafood and fish classics like the Burrata.

The wine list is also a must try for anyone interested in Italian cuisine. A wide range of well known and lesser known Italian wines, both red and white. The cocktail menu is also recommended, the terrace is the perfect place to sample a pre or after dinner drinks to get into the mood.

The terrace is an extension of the restaurant, opening onto the sea. The maritime theme is also noticeable in the pendant lights, the furniture and the roller shutters, creating a fresh and unique atmosphere where various corners with magnificent views of the sea are discovered.

Upon reaching the top, the restaurant as such, the space becomes a more intimate setting. In the heart of the centre, a huge communal table made of tiles stands, evoking the typical red and white trattoria tablecloth.
-
The cocktail bar and DJ booth offer a flexible space, turning into a makeshift dance floor after dinner. At the ends are two more intimate and exclusive spaces with mirrored ceilings and red and green velvet padded walls.
