The Doping Club, Barcelona

Three places in one

By Brian Gallagher 24.04.19

Barcelona now has a sister club to the original The Doping Club located in Milan, the brainchild of Alessandro Mario Cesario, a highly original concept that includes three different food & drink options within the same semi basement premises. Situated on one of the most effervescent corners of the Eixample, Valencia with Enric Granados, The Doping Club is a gourmet pizza restaurant (Dirty Office), a gastronomic restaurant (without a conventional menu) and a clandestine cocktail bar; all accommodated with a space that is divided into two zones, front and back, separated by a glass screen and lace curtains offering tantalising views.

Alessandro Mario Cesario is an inveterate traveller and The Doping Club was inspired by his travels, as well as his home country. The ambience at Dirty Office is that of a traditional pizza restaurant, directly access off the street serving gourmet deep pan crust pizza using sourdough that has been cultivated for 17 years. Using milled Mariani flour, the perfect crunchy base and dough mixture of wholemeal, spelt and malt. The other secret lies with the ingredients, authentic Italian produce with unmistakable flavours of 'fior di latte' mozzarella, botarga fish eggs, the renowned lardo di colonnata cold cuts or the smoked provola cheese.

The gastronomic restaurant behind the glass screen has a completely different ambience, here the food offering is organised around a menu of some 20 ingredients that chefs Mauricio Zillo and Franceso Ruggiero use to create different dishes based on what’s in season or dietary requirements like being vegetarian, vegan, flexitarian or Coeliac. Diners can also choose between a series of tasting menus that features 3, 4 or 5 dishes. Equally there is a set lunch menu that changes daily with two starters, two main courses and two desserts. Served indoors or on the street terrace directly outside. Zillo, Brazilian by birth has worked in some of Spain’s top restaurants as well as France where he opened A Mer in 2013 listed amongst the top 5 restaurants of Paris that year by the Time Out in 2016. His colleague Franceso Ruggiero lends the Italian flavour to the gastronomic creations.

And finally the cocktail bar with its eclectic furniture, red velvet upholstery and moody lighting. Classic and signature cocktails created by award winning barman Francesco Galdi that can be enjoyed either with or after the food. The interior design project for both the gastronomic restaurant and the bar-cocktail bar was created by Alessandro Mario Cesario with unique and authentic vintage pieces collected personally in street markets from around the world. A piano takes centre stage with live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The Doping Club Milan is now a local favourite with professionals from the sector, Barcelona is looking like it’s heading in the same direction.
