Tapeo Bar
Tapas like they should be ...
A small but perfectly formed tapas bar recently opened in the very trendy Born area, Tapeo Bar on C/ Assaonadors, 25 (which runs parallel with Princesca close to the intersection with Montcada). The menu is concise and not too ambitious, featuring a selection of tapas dishes representing the best of local produce, the décor is warm and inviting and the service is excellent not forgetting the interesting wine list which also includes vermouth.
Tapeo Bar is a culinary collaboration between Daniel Rueda (proprietor and chef of Tapeo on C/ Montcada) and chef Carlos Calle. The gastronomic offering is inventive but also familiar. The dishes which are updated regularly are listed on a display of blackboards, divided under different headings such as Esabeches and pickles / Cured, smoked and salt-preserved foods / Surf and turf/ Tapas and ‘half-rations’ as well as a variety of Sandwiches.

The autumn/winter menu features reassuring comfort food options such as Tripe with eel, Rabbit served with snails in escabeche (marinade vegetables), Chicken with prawns, Octopus salad or the ‘la nutria’ fillet of Tuna served with tomato. A variety of local wines and finos as well as the obligatory vermouths complete the offering.

For Dani, a trained chef with an impressive career trajectory (La Dama, Comerç 24, Tapas 24) good tapas is all about the ingredients and the preparation, something that many restaurants seem to get wrong. This combined with good service, in this case provided by Guillermo Bruguera, not just a waiter but a maitre d’ and consummate professional. Tapeo Bar is undoubtedly an equation where the sum is greater than the parts.
