Superclàssic

Vermouth & tapas in La Raval

By Brian Gallagher 12.06.21

The old traditional bars of the Raval are filled character that reflects the neighbourhood with all its history and colour. Superclàssic is no exception, this renovated local bar with its cosy interior and generous terrace on Jardins del Doctor Fleming is located just around the corner from La Boquería. If the walls of Superclàssic could talk they would undoubtedly tell many tales. Today they tell of Stefano Mazza who is an unconditional fan of vermouth, a drink that is closely associated with Barcelona and Catalan culture. Stefano brings a new vision, a youthful zest for experimenting based on the solid foundations of his deep knowledge of vermouth.

There’s no excuse for the food at Superclàssic not being fresh, and superior quality. And that’s exactly what is on offer, the dishes are conceived to compliment the variety of vermouths and beers. There are 3 different home made vermouth macerations on offer (Pedro Ximenes with plums, moscatel and grapefruit and whiskey with cinamon and apple), the classic rosso and the classic bianco from Padró as well as the premium version, not forgetting the Turin inspired rubino. For beer lovers there’s Mahon on tap, while the wine selection includes 18 labels to cose from (6 red, 6 white, 3 rosé and 3 sparkling) with the emphasis on local Catalan producers (Empordà Terra Alta, Alella, Montsant, Penedès, Priorat) but obvouuslly including ‘must-have’ Spanish regions like La Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Rueda.

Among the food highlights; Organic tomato from Barbastro with good oil and salt (cut like a fresh carpaccio, with some olives and a good chive), a table of cold cuts that mixes Iberian (jerky, chorizo) with Italian (coppa) or an assortment of olives and anchovies from the Cantabrian Sea, it is joined by tapas icons. The Russian salad is already a success, both in its version without tuna, as well as the one with a fresh tuna topping, the vitello tonnato brioche or the classic French steak tartare.

Stefano Mazza, is also the owner of Last Monkey, with Superclàssic he has surrounded himself with a team made up of him and his trust, such as Rocío Adán in the living room (with great background in theaters in Barcelona and Madrid) and Alan Boulio in the kitchen, a great connoisseur of La Boquería, its wealth as a supplier and its possibilities.
