Summer nights in Barcelona

By Brian Gallagher 17.07.18

When coverage of the 1992 Olympics was taking place one of the most impacting images was the events taking place in the diving pool, with the entire city as the backdrop the memorable views left a lasting impression, proof of which is the subsequent tourist boom in the years after the Olympics. Just adjacent to the diving pool (above the tracks of the Parallel funicular) is one of the most extraordinary terraces of Barcelona, the Xalet de Monjuïc, a building with a panoramic vista that stretches from the port to Collserola, and back to Monjuïc itself.

The Xalet de Monjuïc first opened in 2004, unlike anything else in Barcelona at that time with a huge surround terrace and two floors of dining, one with a renowned revolving floor, the only one in the city, ensuring that all diners benefit from the views. The restaurant is owned and managed by the Grup Tranvi originally founded in 1982. Interior decor is by the renowned designer Estrella Salietti that includes a variety of spaces indoors and outdoors, covered and uncovered, intimate corners as well as a wide esplanade with the panoramic views.

Chef Jordi Anglí is a recent addition to the Xalet team, for the summer he presents a new menu served on the terrace featuring local and seasonal dishes that reflect the best of Mediterranean cuisine with highlights that include the calamarcitos with fava beans, the grilled clams, the tartar of tuna or the oven baked rapet de Roses (fish). Diners will also be able to enjoy a selection of the Delta’s rice dishes, with dishes like as the fish and seafood paella, mushroom and picantón paella or lobster brothy rice.
