SomSacs

Healthy and tasty cuisine

By Ashley Nave 17.02.17

Barcelona’s healthy eating options gets an important new addition with SomSacs, a minimalist design café and bar, an organic culinary experience, presenting a very carefully conceived food palette for fans of flavourful vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. The recently opened restaurant offers much more than simply natural, organic dishes given that owner and chef Carme Rius, previously of the renowned El Fonoll Marí (Llança, Costa Brava), introduces light, gluten-free dishes that manage to be tasty and nutritional as well. Rius describes SomsSacs as a non-traditional bar café, the simply decorated restaurant introduces and elegant and unusual option to the Eixample neighbourhood, with its combination of contemporary gastronomy, seasonal ingredients and nutritionally balanced dishes.

After spending many years training, researching and cooking different types of food Rius, who is a highly passionate chef, created a menu that includes options for all types of dietary requirements such as lactose intolerant, vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan. SomSacs brings a new, explorative concept in creating dishes that recognise customer needs but not sacrificing taste. Using home-cooking techniques Rius aims to maintain the very best standards with a very considered selection of locally sourced ingredients such as organic chickpeas, rice from the fields of Pals, sauces that are salt-free and the use of coconut and almond milk. At the same time, their creative innovations present a wide range of delicious and interesting dishes without meat or fish, though those options are offered as well.

The restaurant has a selection of local wines, tapas and a very good-value midday menu, that includes a vegan, vegetarian, meat, fish and salad option, bring the essence of Catalan tradition into a non-traditional presentation. The name SomSacs combines the Catalan word 'Som' meaning 'we are' and 'Sac' a term which Rius uses to describe the savoury rice tortillas dishes which are the main highlight here, the tortillas are wrapped around a variety of ingredients which are seasoned and cooked, options include; codfish infused with ratatouille, a sesame seed salmon and the popular seafood paella. Several vegetable options include a chickpea or pumpkin hummus spread on toast, and a selection of fresh salads, including arugula with raspberries, parmesan cheese and sliced pears. They also have some fusion style meat dishes such as roasted pork cheeks, chicken wok, and beef and duck liver.
