Saona, Eixample

Healthy food served in stylish settings

By Brian Gallagher 29.07.21

Increasingly the Barcelona food scene is seeing more restaurant chains that have zero relationship with the typical fast food chains of the past. Instead these places have a greater emphasis on healthy food at reasonable prices and efficient service.  This perfectly describes Saona a new restaurant group with two locations in Barcelona, La Maquinista shopping centre and within the Eixample, on C/ Aribau, between Còrsega y Rosselló. As well as being healthy however the dishes at Saona are most importantly tasty. And the beautiful interior alone is worth a visit.

The summer menu includes a choice of dishes made using seasonal ingredients, a good variety with plenty of vegetarian options. The mid-day set lunch represents good value for money with 3 courses included. Among the highlights of the starters are: Vegetable tempura with kimchi mayonnaise, Octopus on potato aioli, paprika oil and crispy ham and the Russian salad on wanton toast and quail. Main courses include: Iberian ribs cooked at low temperatura, Truffled cannelloni with sausage, mushrooms and parmesan, Arroz a banda en llanda (rice served on a tray) with roasted garlic aioli and Salmon tartar with avocado marinated in lime and soy sauce. Desserts are thankfully the exception to the healthy dishes with banoffee pie and cheesecake options.

The interior design of the Saona restaurant on Aribau recalls the Balearic island of Formentera with a distinctive Mediterranean feel that features natural textures and fabrics. The restaurant occupies the entire ground floor of the building, including a mezzanine level with seating and a privee. The main dining area is located at the rear with loads of natural light from a courtyard / patio area. The bar is also located here, and there is a sizeable terrace on the street.

“For us, Barcelona has always been a special challenge. We are very excited to have the opportunity to offer something different within one of the nerve centres of Catalan gastronomy. We are hoping to be well received by the Barcelona locals and enjoy it as much as they do in Valencia or Madrid,” says Gonzalo Calvo, president of the group, founded in 2013.
