Robata Sushi & Grill
Tastes of Japan
The semi-pedestrian street Enric Granados, one of the few in the Eixample is fast becoming a culinary Mecca for Barcelona residents and visitors alike. The latest addition to its collection of wonderful restaurants is Robata Sushi & Grill, opened just a few months ago. This gastronomic jewel was conceived by Ricardo Figuera and Fabiola, a Venezuelan couple who have been living in Barcelona for the last number of years. Fabiola is also the chef and directs the kitchen. Trained in Japan and the United States she is one of the few Sushi Chefs in the world with an official certification awarded by the Sushi Skills Institute and AJSA (All Japan Sushi Association. She is passionate about all things related to gastronomy and over the years has taught herself how to cook based on her travels around the world after leaving her native city of Caracas, also a melting pot of culinary cultures. Her experience in Japan marked a before-and-after in her professional trajectory, while there she studied under Master Chef Andy Matsuda.
One of the defining features of training as a sushi chef is the repetition of simple tasks in order to appreciate how complicated it is to cook simply. This philosophy is also part of the approach to serving authentic Japanese food at Robata following strict traditional techniques but with western influences. Its menu features nigiri, sashimi, tempura rolls, uramakis, maki, snacks such as Lotus Chips (lotus root chips seasoned with Kombu salt), genuine nods to Japanese traditions such as the Yaki Oniguiri (triangles of rice made at Robata), the addictive Gyozas (made the classical Japanese way, steamed in a pan and then uncovered and left to toaste), and other tasty dishes like the Toro Soasado (Blue Fin Tuna belly served with yakiniku sauce), robatayaki (skewers with either chicken, cherry tomato and bacon, sirloin steak, asparagus, pardón peppers, etc.) or the Robata grilled salmon, amongst many more dishes.

Another good reason to investigate this restaurant is its decor, the owners carried out a complete refurbishment of the ground floor of the building where it’s situated on the corner of Enric Granados with Mallorca. A collection of warm and welcoming spaces with vintage wooden lanterns, marble table tops, comfortable seating and most importantly great acoustics. At the centre is the kitchen with views of the street, the corner location providing exceptional views of the passing pedestrians as well as more inward contemplative private areas. Robata is a restaurant where diners will be taken on a sensual journey through Japanese culture where food, service and décor all come together in a unified vision.
