The roots of natural wines, a year of cultivation
Sd•edicions
Wine is not simply an alcoholic beverage, it is a culture and despite the fact that Spain is one of the largest exporters of wine in the world the ‘culture’ of wine in Spain is still relatively undeveloped. The uninitiated can be easily be confused by the terms organic, natural and biodynamic wines etc. so what exactly is Natural Wine? That is the question that this book written by Clara Isamat Rivière, sets out to resolve but not by simply defining the term but by meeting the producers and exploring the theme through their experience. According to the author of Raíces del vino natural, un año de viña (The roots of natural wine, a year of cultivation) natural wine is “that wine which is made solely from the grape.”
Interest in natural and organic wines has grown exponentially over the last number of years promoted by restaurants and specialised wine shops. Other countries like neighbouring France and Italy already have an established market for natural wines but Spain and Catalonia are just now beginning to appreciate the distinctive qualities that define natural wines.

Raíces del vino natural, un año de viña considers the passing of the seasons over the course of the year, working methods in the vineyard and the winery illustrated through a selection of natural wine producers in Spain. A recognition and celebration of the winegrowers, their lives and their wines, a tour through 27 wineries producing natural wines, wines obtained with the least possible intervention.

Roots of natural wine, a year of vineyard offers the reader a beautifully ilustrated photographic itinerary through which the reader can appreciate the landscape where the vines are cultivated, the workings of the wineries and the day-to-day of the producers themselves.
-
The book is structured according to the four seasons, winter, spring, summer and autumn; the reader is introduced to different wineries along with their respective winemakers. The author provides the basic information on the processes employed by each of the producers and these in turn tell us about their interests and motivations for producing natural wines. The book also includes a short glossary of the technical terminology used in the text, an essential tool for initiation in the world of natural wines.

A trained photographer and sommelier by vocation Clara Isamat Rivière has worked for over 20 years as a photographer in daily newspapers and cultural publications. She first came to the world of wine after opening her own restaurant in 2005. Since then, she has been getting closer to producers little or nothing interventionists, their stories and their wines. She gives advice and organises tastings through the website www.vinoscompartidos.com. In 2015 she took out her camera again to teach and share all she had learned about these new crops over the last 10 years.
