Pla, 20 years on

A restaurant to discover (or rediscover)

By Brian Gallagher 19.02.18

The ground breaking restaurant Pla is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month of February, with a special menu that features some of the best loved dishes that have been served here since first opening in 1998. The gastronomic project conceived by Jaume Pla was one of the first of a new wave of restaurants to open in the Gothic quarter that returned to the roots of Catalan cuisine. Seasonal ingredients sourced used in traditional recipes with a contemporary twist, served within the old walls of the Casco Antiguo. To mark this important occasion (and only during the month of February) clients can enjoy the tasting menu "Pla: 20 years from the Mediterranean to the rest of the world".

Some of the highlights on the menu include dishes with unexpected flavours and combinations such as the grilled carrot carpaccio, the elderflower and horseradish, the mackerel and flamed mackerel, the avocado and crunchy onion and the rice dishes that have formed part of the menu over the last 20 years, a menu that celebrates the bounty of the Mediterranean landscape.  Andrew Smith, the Irish chef who for the last three years has been directing the kitchen, has introduced subtle nuances to the dishes that, as always, will be paired with wines suggested by the French sommelier Damien Aubry.

After Pla, other projects have been created by the Barcelonian restaurateur, such as Bar del Pla or Cometa Pla (C / del Cometa 5), a b ar à vins & tapas where you can find a suggestive proposal of bio dishes and natural and ecological wines in a Informal atmosphere, just a minute walk from Pla. The last place born with Pla label is PEPA Pla (Aribau 41), an old business of buying and selling second-hand books transformed into a space for chatting, eating and drinking.
