Perelló 1898
Cod, tradition and 'tasting'
The emblematic Mercat del Ninot has just recently reopened its doors to the Barcelona public. This excellent example of 19th Century wrought iron architecture together with other municipal buildings such as the Espai Born (originally constructed as a wholesale market) represent the best examples of the spirit of Catalan ingenuity. The reinvented Ninot has been equipped with a supermarket located in a new extended basement level while almost one third of the ground floor food stands have been provided with ‘zonas de degustació’ or tasting areas for the general public. One of these new stands is Perelló 1898, the celebrated bacallaneria, the family owned business previously owned four separate stands within the market which they have now brought together within one spectacular stand designed by the Sandra Tarruella interior design studio.
Made up from several zones the most impressive of which is the ‘zona de degustación’ or tasting zone, along a contemporary solid timber bar counter provided with seating which serves tapas, vermouth and other beverages all day long.

The Perello 1898 ‘tasting bar’ revolves around the various local dishes defined by saltwater fish. A type of food meant for sharing that includes everything from sandwiches of salted cod and olivaires served in savoury bread rolls, quick snacks and shared dishes, canned goods, crestas, croquettes and fritters, among other options. The kitchen, managed by Argentinean chef Guada Reig (Can Nuri, Fermi Puig), focuses on local product and traditional recipes such as cod with ratatouille, empedrado de bacalao (rice with cod), the Cerdanya ‘trinchado’ with smoked sardines or the peas served with sausage and cod tripe, or other more typical options like the cod ‘Rocks’ with garlic and romesco oil which is one of the most popular dishes. “We are first and foremost bacallaners (salted cod dealers) our speciality is cod and salted fish products,” point out the managers of Perelló 1898.

All these dishes are complimented by a wide variety of wines, cavas, beers ad home made vermouths. The Perelló stand stocks more than 50 wine labels, the idea is to reflect the sell by the glass so that clients will always find something new and surprising.
