Palosanto + Kaki
Gótico’s new tavern and cocktail bar
For anyone who hasn’t set foot in Plaza George Orwell it’s one of Barcelona’s liveliest corners where all human life exists cheek by jowl, well-heeled and down at heel, tourist and native, high brow and low brow. Straddling this effervescent square and C. Avinyó (immediately behind) is this new gastronomic addition to the neighbourhood, the Palosanto restaurant and Kaki cocktail bar (located on the ground floor and basement of the Arai Aparthotel) are the last pieces of the jigsaw puzzle first presented this time last year for the luxuriously appointed Arai (belonging to the Derby Hotels Collection) which together with Palosanto is an exercise in both conservation and contemporary design combined with a gastronomic quality tapas restaurant and cocktail bar. Quite a few new establishments have opened over recent months on or near Avinyó including Espai Ferrer i Guàrdia and the gastronomic Hotel D.O., bringing an interesting new culinary focus to this part of the Gótico.
Palosanto is under the direction of the Sant Telmo Group and Derby Hotels, who undeniably have a Midas touch regarding their ability to put together characterful eateries (Fígaro, El Canalla, Café Sant Telmo). The Kaki cocktail bar is accommodated within the basement area accessed from C Avinyó which has an impressive array of international vodkas, an alternative to the ubiquitous Gin&Tonic currently gripping Barcelona.

Palosanto could be described as "neo-tavern" its culinary offering includes traditional dishes as well as quality tapas. Sofritos, oldy-world recipes and genuine care in the kitchen: the secret here is to only use the best raw materials, Palosanto is not afraid to include the classics on its menu including authentic Russian Salad, Croquettes, Potato Omelette or the Fried Eggs with Iberian Ham. There are also more contemporary and sophisticated options like the Wild Sea Bass Tiradito with Yellow Pepper Sauce, the Squid served with Foie and Corn or the Picaña Tagliata with Shimeji mushrooms. Good examples of their commitment to the superior quality produce include the Gouthier oysters, Boquerones en vinagre, the anchovies, Tudela 'Feo' tomatoes and its cured ham. From Monday through Friday Palosanto offers a special-menu offer based on seasonal produce together with the best meat and fresh fish.

Palosanto’s interior design is retro-vintage which manages to be warm and convincing, the terrace with eight tables on Plaza George Orwell is a highlight, bathed in sunlight during the summer mornings and afternoons. However the most charming part of the project is undoubtedly the basement Kaki cocktail bar which features recycled materials, lush velvet upholstery and tenuous lighting, if one imagines what a cocktail bar should look like Kaki is that bar.
