Nobu Barcelona

The height of good taste

By Brian Gallagher 22.10.19

One of Barcelona’s most important gastronomic events this autumn 2019 is the opening of Nobu in the renowned eponymous hotel chain. A chain of hotels and restaurants that straddles the world structured around its cuisine founded by the Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa in the 1990s in partnership with other investors including Robert de Niro. Barcelona’s Nobu is the third to open in Spain in collaboration with the Selenta Group (the others are located in Marbella and Ibiza) and marks a vote of confidence not only in the city’s tourist credentials but its rich and varied gastronomic scene. Nobu is known for its Japanese cuisine that features Peruvian influences the country where the chef first got his start.

Occupying the 23rd floor of the former Gran Hotel Torre Catalunya overlooking the Plaza de los Países Catalanes beside Sants Station the restaurant interior features a warm timber clad interior design with nods to local design. It goes without saying that the views are exceptional and unique in this neighbourhood (on the border of Sants and the Eixample).

The signature dish at Nobu is the Black Cod with miso which involves marinating the fish for 72 hours and is extraordinary, guaranteed to live on in the memory long after tasting it. Other fish dishes that stand out are the Tiradito of whitefish or the Yellowtail Jalapeño, not forgetting of course its selection Sushi. Nobu also has its own pastry chef so the desert menu is also worth investigation for its many surprises, not least of which are the mochis.

The kitchen is partly open plan to the dining area that can accommodate 200 diners which includes the sushi bar and a private room Matsuhisa’s Table for groups. The team of chefs under the guidance of Hervé Courtot create their interpretations of the dishes that have made this restaurant famous together with other unique creations featuring locally sourced ingredients. There is selection of national and international wines as well as sakes. The team of servers ensure a level of service that matches the great food.

The completed overall food offering will be in pace later this year including the Kozara bar on the ground floor that will undoubtedly become a popular meeting point thanks to its location in close proximity to the Ave train station and its food offering with a menu of local and Japanese tapas, cocktails and a variety of sakes and whiskeys. As well as the cozy Nobu Café.
