Mayura
Pioneering Indian restaurant in BCN
This year Mayura celebrates its 20th anniversary, it opened originally back in March of 2006. The pioneering Indian restaurant is a festival of colours, textures and flavours that has been an ambassador for both Indian food and its culture for more than two decades. Owners Rajnish and Mayura Kapoor chose the Eixample neighbourhood to locate their restaurant, at the very heart of Barcelona’s culinary scene. Years later and c/ Girona has been converted into an oasis of pedestrian calm with Mayura at no. 57 perfectly positioned on the chaflan with panoramic windows over the surrounding intersection with Diputación. The ideal place to get a flavour of Indian hospitality and dip into the culture of the sub-continent without leaving Barcelona.
The word mayura means peacock in the Sanskrit language, the male bird of the peafowl species which is native to Asia. Its colourful plumage inspires both the interior décor and presentation of Mayura’s culinary offering. The restaurant is decorated in bright iridescent tones that catch the eye in a space that is flooded with natural light. The solid timber tables and chairs are combined with sofas upholstered in colourful fabrics with a decorative water feature at the entrance.

Given that India covers a vast physical area with and surpasses China as the planet’s most populated country its cuisine is rich and varied. The food offering at Mayura draws from of a number of geographical Indian regions, depending on the season and the different festivals that inspire the menus throughout the year. The recipes also reflect the influence of the Mediterranean and the rich local food culture.

Healthy, vegetable-based specialties like the Kachumber Mayura, the perfect bridge between cultures: a Mediterranean version of the traditional Kachumber salad with tomatoes dressed with paneer, basil, yogurt cream with fresh herbs, chopped pistachios, and black mustard vinaigrette. Or the Baigan Bhartha, eggplant slow-roasted to achieve a smoky flavour, then pureed and macerated with Indian spices, tomato, and herbs. And the Masala Vegetables, an exquisite dish of paneer (a typical Indian cheese) in a fresh spiced masala, with peas, cauliflower, potatoes, and a mix of vegetables—a true ode to well-being.

Although we mostly think of Indian food and vegetarian dishes, for meat lovers the specialties include, the Acharei Chicken is Mayura's homage to traditional pickles: juicy chicken cubes cooked in an aromatic Indian sauce with intense spices, a touch of acidity, and slightly spicy notes. The sweet and sour combination comes from the Mango Chicken: exquisite chicken cubes in a mango chutney curry, accompanied by pieces of fresh green mango. Meanwhile, the Chicken Lababdar is a tribute to the land, a dish originating from Muglai, made with a creamy chicken curry, peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, cream, and a sweet touch of coconut that makes it irresistible. And for those who prefer seafood, there's the Tandoor Prawns, a spectacular and impressive dish of prawns marinated in traditional spices and yogurt, extremely juicy and with delicate smoky notes.

“Mayura is a project of love, a journey that Mayura and I wanted to embark on, although it was she who brought the business to life. The menu, the interior, the ambiance, and the decor. The project was her inspiration and bears her personal stamp,” recalls Rajnish Kapoor, Mayura’s husband and the restaurant’s director.
