La Palma de Bellafila
Contemporary Catalan cuisine
There must have been a time when the only food served in the classic restaurants of Barcelona’s Gótico was either Catalan or French. Nowadays it seems as if these emblematic establishments serving local cuisine such as El Gran Cafè and Agut d’Avignó have all but disappeared. But not completely, some are surviving and then there is a growing trend to revive the unique qualities of Catalan cooking with projects like La Palma de Bellafila. Opened last summer, 2024 the restaurant is located on the eponymous street where Pla once operated. The founders, Judith Giménez and Albert Rial have been managing the nearby Bodega La Palma for over twenty years. This new venture is however a more ambitious undertaking, with a laid-back gastronomic offering combined with a curated selection of wines.
Nestled into the labyrinthine streets of the picturesque gothic quarter close to the Ayuntamiento there is a timeless quality to the restaurant interior and its menu. The atmosphere is intimate with a range of seating options, including a bar counter looking into the kitchen, or the sala with its wrap-around banquette seating. A mezzanine level framed by a stone arch overlooks the sala. The food offering is seasonal with the emphasis on the product. Chef Jordí Parramon has created a short but diverse menu with some traditional Catalan recipes that have been lightly reinterpreted. Savoury dishes for sharing or individual helpings, depending on the time of year: Ceps and foie croquettes, Sautéed bouchot mussels, Crispy pig’s ears, Baby lamb ribs cooked in garlic, Bacon confit with prawns and guinea fowl served with pears, Marinated sardines with grapes, Pilotillas mar y montaña (surf & turf meatballs), Duck cannelloni.

As you would expect there are several tempting options for desserts, given the extensive collection of sweet dishes in Catalan cooking. Seasonal fruit, homemade pastries and tartlets as well as the Pijama de la casa, a Barcelona variation on Peach Melba. The wine list is assessed by sommelier Alain Salamano which consists of mostly Catalan wines with a third featuring other Spanish labels and the remainer made up of selected European choices.
