La Guingueta

La Gingueta is inspired by the traditional beach ‘chiringuito’ (beach hut) with its informal relaxed style, nothing more than a canopy providing shade for seating, a kitchen, a bar and toilets. The coast line is littered with these structures that provide sun worshippers with their basic food and drink requirements during summer months.

Constructed on the boardwalk between the paving and the sand on Barceloneta’s Playa de San Sebastián this restaurant/bar is the perfect spot to seek refuge from the midday sun or enjoy cocktails by moonlight. Sandra Tarruella was inspired by the gastronomic offering of Carles Abellan, signature tapas and heady cocktails with the creation of La Guingueta. The colour scheme (as well as featuring the obligatory red) includes orange, black and kaki green tones which together with the natural wood tables, the wicker lamp shades and the dappled light passing through the timber shades makes for a warm and cozy ambience, laid back and masculine at the same time. The tables are shared, some benches provided with cushions form the lounge area, the fresh fruit and potted herbs and plants on display recall the fresh ingredients and sunny disposition that defines Carles Abellan’s cooking. Worth taking a trip to Barceloneta to rediscover the charms of al fresco beach cuisine.
