Adriana Chía's next generation cocktail bar
Barcelona’s cocktail culture takes a step forward with the opening of La Antigua Compañía de las Indias, a very personal project with an award winning local bartender at the helm, the very young but nevertheless accomplished Adriana Chía. With a career that started with graphic design Chía later discover her passion for cocktails and after working at places like 41ºC, Hoja Santa, Solange and Tickets amongst others she put this very personal project together with Ana Zaragosa, an investor that shares Adriana’s very refined sensibility. The seed of this project came about in the summer of 2017, when both women met after Adriana had won the World Class Competition Best Spanish Bartender in 2016.
At its heart La Antigua Compañía de las Indias is a creative cocktail bar with every possible detail carefully curated, the interior design, the music (live and piped), the glasses, the food menu and of course the cocktails. Adriana defines her conceptual philosophy as gastronomic cocktails. “I’m a cooking freak. It’s what inspires me most. When I make cocktails, I rely on recipes and many gastronomic products are involved in the process. I have a sketch book where I draw and detail food dishes turned into cocktails.” For that reason, she calls her approach “drinkable gastronomy”. A perfect example is the White Witch (whose name is based on a Latin legend), which takes its inspiration from the last dessert served at elBulli: the peach seed, synthesized into a cocktail.

La Antigua Compañía de las Indias is inspired by the romanticism of the colonial era, with the discovery and trade between Spain and the tropical countries of Latin America: Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, with a special emphasis in this last country, one of the flagships of the cocktail bar. The name of the establishment is precisely inspired by the company that managed the maritime traffic of that time and that allowed trade with both countries and continents.

The bar, located in L'Eixample, in the heart of Diagonal (the perfect location for a project of this nature, where several Barcelona neighbourhoods meet), offers a warm, luxurious and intimate ambience. The interior design gives off a colonial and tropical air, with industrial touches that combine with harmony and sophistication noble materials such as wood, marble, leather, cement and gold details. Plants and sifted lights round the atmosphere.

Crossing the threshold from the Diagonal entrance the main bar area is defined by a long bar counter with brick walls and double height space over the seating area leading to a privée with sofas and armchairs that can be reserved separately, or as an overflow space when the bar is full, perfect for long evenings with live music sessions every Wednesday night.
