KEANU Izakaya Bar

Pan-Asian Cuisine

By Brian Gallagher 08.11.23

The rise and rise of Asian cuisine in Barcelona continues apace. KEANU is the most recent arrival and represents everything (and more) that makes this type of food popular amongst locals. Inspired by several schools of Asian cooking KEANU is both a restaurant and a cocktail bar with a continuous kitchen service from noon till two in the morning (except Sundays when it closes at midnight). The sophisticated ambience and beautiful interior is the perfect setting for savouring this healthy and flavourful cuisine.

The restaurant menu is conceived by head chef Ulan Beishenaliev and executed by Ángel Villa, Japanese cuisine is well represented but the menu is better described as pan-Asian. The starters offer both warm and hot options, with Salmon pak choi, Shrimp tempura, Karaage chicken, Salmon and tuna tataki or, of course, some traditional Korean style picantón thighs (also picantón).

The soups also deserve special mention, with a complex seafood Tom Yum (a little-known Thai soup in Barcelona), Pho Bo or traditional Beef ramen.

And unusually the best shawarma in Barcelona, the KEANU version features lamb or chicken, which has just been added to a menu. The overarching idea is to connect with the tastes of the local Barcelona clientele and offer a unique and memorable experience.

The cocktail bar is another reason for discovering or returning to KEANU. Although the wine list is extensive and offers references for all budgets, cocktails are what KEANU is becoming renowned for most: an opportunity to show the versatility of cocktails as a pairing with their food dishes but also to propose liquid recipes that include fascinating and exotic Asian ingredients. For anyone who is interested in exploring the world of sake, KEANU has a selection of 20 references (which will soon be more).
