Juanita Lalá
Food and Boom
Accommodated within the Palau del Mar building right in front of the Port Vell (on the side directly opposite the port) like a hinge between Barceloneta and the Ribera this new restaurant-club-cocktail bar in a short time has become a firm favourite on the Barcelona night scene. Juanita Lalá is the creation of two Argentinean brothers Felipe and Federico with years of experience in the hospitality sector and 5 restaurants under their management. And it shows.
With a generous outdoor terrace (with no overlooking neighbours, a sea breeze and views of Barceloneta) and a funky interior design the food here is market fresh, Mediterranean with some Latin American touches thrown in. The menu mixes tapas and shared portions, obviously there is lots of great sea food like the Ceviche Juanita Lalá and the Squid with Crunchy Prawns. Other stand outs include the excellent Burratina with Rocket Salad and Tomato Tartar, the Quinoa Salad as well as a choice of pizzas and specially design burgers.

The presentation of the food matches the imaginative interior design of the restaurant (mostLY featuring recycled machinery and pipes in synch with the industrial character of the building); mini-deep frying baskets, colourful combinations of ingredients and wooden trays instead of plates. The cocktails include classics like the Pisco Sour, Margarita Lalá as well as the more inventive Margarita Lalá and the Bloullob (melon and pineapple juice combined with rum) designed to compliment the food. There’s also a selection of alcohol free options.

Juanita Lalá becomes a night club once the kitchen stops serving food, tables are wheeled out of the way, lights are turned low, the mirror ball starts to rotate and the Dj takes over, supported by a powerful sound system that also benefits form the neighbour free location. Bimba Bosé took charge of the decks for the opening (one of the best parties in Barcelona recently) with back up provided by Josep and Raver Jewish with Arnau Obiols, probably three of the most interesting djs and live performers on the Barcelona underground scene right now. We can expect more of the same from Jaunita Lalá.
