Green Spot Diagonal

Cuisine to proselytise

By Brian Gallagher 07.03.22

Like its counterpart in the Port Vell neighbourhood, Green Spot Diagonal is a beautifully designed restaurant with a very varied and surprising gastronomic offering.  Unlike the original Green Spot the one on Diagonal includes a few meat and fish options as main courses. But the vast majority of the dishes are vegetarian, inspired by seasonal, Km 0 ingredients.

The most obvious thing on arrival at Green Spot Diagonal is the restaurant’s terrace, which you have to walk through before entering. This must be one of the most beautiful terraces in Barcelona, it has a magical quality after dark especially. Looking over the Jardinets María Dolors Bargallo it is organised over several levels with views over the park, completely sheltered from the traffic on Av. Diagonal, the ambience is relaxed and perfect for any time of year thanks to the heaters. Inside the restaurant interior is equally calming and relaxed with a pastel colour palette and lots of wood. The restaurant occupies the same space where the iconic Laurel & Hardy club was located during the 1970s, in fact.

It could be said that the idea behind Green Spot is to proselytise Barcelona foodies, to convince its clientele to eat more vegetable based dishes. This is achieved through its surprising cuisine and beautiful design, not just the interior but every aspect of the dining experience, from the graphics of the menu, to the music selection and the friendly serving staff.

The food is guaranteed to delight inquisitive palettes. Among the highlights of the starters and shared dishes at Green Spot Diagonal is the Buffalo stracciatella with leeks and hazelnuts a seasonal dish for the spring. The green croquettes with wasabi mayonnaise and the irresistible Kale chips with brewer’s yeast are irresistible. As are the creamy textures of dishes like the Jerusalem artichoke puree with chestnuts and the Maitake mushrooms, salted baked aubergine, cashews and white miso.

Meat and fish dishes on the curent menu include Round organic beef tartar and Wild trout, dukkah and black cauliflower. Highlights among the vegatarian options include the Tagliolini with lemon zest, artichokes and straciatella sounds like it should not work but has an unusual lemon tang that lends a fresh taste. And there are favourites such as the Saffron risotto with shallot and parsnip ragout curry spot and the Spinach Hamburger. Not forgetting a selection of pizzas and salads.

The Green Spot Diagonal menu is based on seasonal products from small local producers that will change along with the seasons on a regular basis. The cuisine is essentially Mediterranean and always emphasizing how much vegetables can contribute. There are only a few fish or animal protein dishes, but all have been soured from respectful breeders and abatoirs.
