Gatsby

Speakeasy, Cocktails & Food

By B Gallagher 12.05.15

The Roaring 20s and the excesses of that era inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald to create one of the most iconic figures of 20th C American literature, Jay Gatsby. Self made millionaire who acquired his wealth through boot legging the Great Gatsby hosted infamous parties on his Long Island estate in New York State until his luck finally ran out. This fictional character provides the inspiration for Gatsby, the latest addition to the Barcelona club/restaurant scene. Just as the speakeasies of the prohibition era could be found in clandestine and unexpected places so too with Barcelona’s Gatsby which is accommodated within a shopping centre off C/Tuset, one of the hubs of the city’s nightlife offering. See Ajoblanco, Bling Bling and Sutton.

The club is a large open plan space divided into different zones with a raised stage area located directly behind a very suave cocktail bar at the entrance. A central dance floor dominates the space with banquette seating as well as a number of private tables organised around it. The décor is a contemporary imitation of Art Deco with some interesting light features and other period details with gold and white tones predominating throughout. Architect Daniel Poch and interior designer Alexis Cogul of "Danda studio" together with Project manager Manuel Guerra, looked after the architectural and designer elements of the project. The power of the architectural project lies primarily in discovering such an unexpected space within the shopping centre location.
