Café-Bar Restaurant Reñé

By Brian Gallagher 25.03.14

Reñé is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional French Bistrôt, the recently opened café-bar restaurant takes its name from the sweet factory and the pastry shop that previously stood here. Located right a the heart of Barcelona’s Quadrat d’Or the facade is an excellent example of the local modernisme architectural style and has been listed for preservation by Barcelona city council. Well-known interior designer Carlos Martinez designed the renovation which manages to preserve the charm of the original space with its large display windows and elaborate interior combining the wood and marble of the main bar with ceiling plaster ornamentation that accentuates that modernisme spirit but with a modern touch.

The main dining area of the restaurant stretches from the street (where diners can sit at the re-constructed modernisme marble bar counter) to deep within the plan with views into the hectic kitchen area at the rear. As well as the street terrace there is an adjacent dining area off the entrance that can be reserved for groups.

Chef Moisés Ibarra has put together a selection of dishes that perfectly convey the essence of a contemporary Mediterranean bistro, quality cuisine that combines tradition and innovation with the emphasis on quality, fresh and local produce. Highlights include the Warm Tuna-Belly Salad with Escalora Frisée (curly endive), Artichoke Hearts and Sauteed Sun-dried Rinadi tomatoes, the popular Steak Tartar, the now renowned Patatas Bravas Reñé (potatoes served with garlic-mayonnaise), Crispy Chicken Cannelloni with Bechamel Foie, the Diced Steak served with glazed onions in red wine sauce as well as the rice dishes; the Reñé Brut Rice or the Lobster with Rice. The restaurant also has a glass cabinet where the fresh fish brought straight from the auction is displayed daily at the entrance area. Not forgetting the great assortment of handmade desserts, authentic delicacies like Crème Bulée, all kinds of pastries (especially the Sacher) and homemade cookies.
