Flash Flash at 40

70’s chic, timeless cuisine

By Brian Gallagher 29.07.15

Celebrating its 45th anniversary during this month of July the iconic Flash Flash restaurant remains one of Barcelona’s most dynamic eateries and compelling interiors. Nowadays its stark white tones and Pop inspired décor seem just as cutting edge and experimental as it must have done originally all those years ago, especially so given the proliferation of the neo-vintage style of recently opened restaurants here. Some of the best known figures from the world of the arts, politics and society have passed through the doors of Flash Flash over the years and its history is closely connected with that of Barcelona.

The story behind Flash Flash is almost a micro-history of the changes that were going on in the city during the transition from the 60s into the 70s and ultimately the arrival of democracy in 1978. The brainchild of two couples who were friends socially, photographer Leopoldo Pomés and wife Karin Leiz and the architect Alfonso Milá and his wife, the project was a genuine leap into the unknown given that none of the parties involved had any background in the world of catering. Designed by architects Milá and his associate Correa the project reflects the break with the past and the emergence of a new generation influenced by the Beatles, Antonioni, Pop culture, youth, exuberance and a new way of doing things. Karin Leiz is the svelte model holding the eponymous flash used as a decorative motif throughout the interior.

From the beginning the culinary focus involved two staples, the tortilla and the burger (the former the result of the misdiagnosis regarding a cholesterol problem) which to this day define the menu, new varieties of tortilla are added on a regular basis, over the years there are have literally been hundreds of varieties.
