El Nacional could be considered a food hall or a really large restaurant offering a wide variety of food (4 restaurants; La Brasería, La Llotja, La Tapería and La paradeta, as well as 4 bars; Beers and preserves bar, Wine and cured meats bar, Oyster bar and Cocktails Bar) open from 12 midday till 1 in the morning every day of the year. The gastronomic offering has been supervised by chef Carles Tejedor based on fresh quality produce, sourced locally with the emphasis on Iberian cuisine from the entire peninsula and southern France.

The building which occupies the entire interior courtyard of city block bounded by Passeig de Gràcia, Gran Via and Pau Claris represents an excellent example of 19^th Century industrial architecture featuring a series of roof lit shallow brick vaults which was formerly used as a car park. The refurbishment work was carried out by Lázaro Rosa-Violán and constitutes his most ambitious commission to date here in Barcelona, 3500 sq.m. of space decorated in a retro-industrial style with each of the specific zones given its own character which nevertheless also form a coherent whole.
