El Bar Barcelona

New chef Alejandro González presents the summer menu

By Brian Gallagher 25.07.18

If a map of Barcelona’s gastronomic restaurants were drawn the vast concentration would probably be located in the city centre, grouped around the axis that stretches from the Gothic quarter to the top of Passeig de Gràcia. However for anyone prepared to explore the territory a few hundred meters away there are many worthwhile surprises, one of them is El Bar Barcelona.

El Bar is a gastronomic restaurant accommodated within a warm and welcoming space that is located on the chaflán of the Eixample Esquerre with both a bar and a small seating area on the ground floor, as well as a street terrace, together with a first floor dining room that can be booked for private events. Chef Alejandro González, who trained at some of Barcelona’s and Spains’s most renowned restaurants including Gaig, Fonda Gaig, Comerç 24, Dos Cielos y Taverna Hofmann (Barcelona), as well as Akelarre and A Fuego Negro (San Sebastián), presents the summer menu. The food is contemporary, informal using straight forward techniques that respect the raw ingredients and reflect the changing seasons. Flavours and textures are beautifully combined in a process where the influences of Gonzaléz are clear. Highlights on the summer menu includes the poached and cooked organic egg in breadcrumbs and summer truffle (sublime), grilled octapus with pimentón parmentier, rosemary caviar rocket and the Sirloin steak tartar with pont neuf potato. Not forgetting dessert with several excellent options to chose from, an unmissbale however is the milk pudding with sweet guacamole and blood orange sorbet.

The other main reason for choosing El Bar is sommelier Sergi Giménez, who previously worked at Colibrí, Sergi is knowledgable about local and international wines and is happy to provide advice. Many of the wines, finos and manzanillas are available by the glass, the emphasis here is mostly on Spanish and French wines but featuring some surprises expertly chosen by Sergi to compliment the menu.

Last but not least, added to the many reasons to come here is the cheese board with numerous local Catalan and Asturian options. Clients can sample the cheese board selection paired with a glass of wine or after dinner.
