Country cooking with Mediterranean flavour

The knuckle of streets between Plaça Catalunya and Gran Vía has over recent years become a Mecca for a new generation of tapas bars and restaurants that cater to both locals and tourists alike. Corxus is the latest tapas restaurant to open in this hectic zone of culinary activity, it’s the second restaurant belonging to the group, the original opened in Ibiza a few years ago. Combining rural Spanish cuisine and gastronomy with rustic decor and interior design, this new culinary proposal seeks to differentiate itself from competitors in the area.

Corxus specialises in market cuisine prepared along home-made recipes using products from several Spanish regions. These raw materials such as the shellfish, fresh fish, meats and vegetables are on display for all to see at the main entrance off Rambla Catalunya, just below Gran Vía. House specials include Huevos Cabreados (poached eggs in olive oil served over potato chips), Artichoke Chips and the home-made Mi-cuit of Foie at reasonable prices that compare favourably with other restaurants in the area. The wine selection has also been carefully thought through to compliment Corxus’ culinary offering and includes a selection of Catalan wines, together with Salamanca, La Rioja, Madrid, Ribera and Toro.

    “Our philosophy is to provide a personal service to our customers,” explains sommelier and host, Jesús Martínez. “If we are asked for something that we don’t include on the menu then we’ll do our best to satisfy the customer with the dish they want,” clarifies Martínez.

    The décor is inspired by traditional rustic taverns and the original found space. Pine floors are combined with elements sourced from old Catalan farmhouses including doors, stone wash hand basins and vintage furniture. Fresh flowers and potted plants together with a warm lighting scheme make for a friendly and inviting ambience.
