CHEFS is a genuinely innovative new culinary project which is aimed at people who are interested in cooking healthy food and but don’t have the time to plan a balanced diet or track down required ingredients for healthy dishes. A ground breaking concept in Barcelona (first of its kind here and Spain), where the customer can buy the ingredients for healthy dishes organised by recipe. In this way not only does CHEF S offer its clients organic foods but more importantly it sources all the necessary ingredients for a given meal which are put together in a paper bag with a step-by-step recipe and which can be prepared in around 30 mins. “We don’t sell food, we sell recipes,” according to founder Montserrat Subirana.
CHEF S is located at 310 Aragon Street (between Roger de Lluria and Bruc), in a large space measuring 160 sq.m. (plus 50 back office) designed by Paula Morillo Mouriño and Alex; the design studio ruiz + company are responsible for the corporate image and signage. The inspiration behind the design is to convey the concept that eating healthy food can be both easy and delicious. In this way CHEF S aims to be more than a store, but rather an experience catering to its customers needs.
The layout of the shop is extremely well laid out, good design and communication is an integral part of a project like this which aims at changing attitudes and introducing healthier habits. The main part of the shop has four islands of stainless steel display cases and built-in refrigerator containers which organise the food according into cereals, proteins, vegetable and mixed categories. There is a bread shop to one side which only offers produce made using (celiac friendly) organic spelt flour, Kamut, rye and buckwheat. The walls are flanked by shelving featuring difficult to find organic food stuffs and other niche food produce. At the very rear is a space for presentations and informative talks.
The secret behind CHEF S is the team of professional chefs who create the recipes and guarantee nutritional value as well as easy to follow instructions. The recipes are reviewed and updated according to the availability of seasonal products. In total, there will always be 16 recipes, 4 of them will change each week, so that each month the entire range of suggestions change.
CHEF S is the brainchild of Montserrat Subirana Clèric, a passionate sports enthusiast and advocate for healthy living. With a degree in Physical Activity and Sports and Post Grad in Nutrition, Subirana has more than 12 years of experience in the world of fitness and health, she was involved with the organisation and management of water sports including swimming, synchronized swimming, diving and water polo during the emblematic 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
