Cheese Please

Can Luc, Mecca for cheese lovers in BCN

By Brian Gallagher 23.10.17

Luc Talbordet is the driving force behind the Fromagerie Can Luc, an establishment that should be on the radar of anyone in Barcelona who is interested in cheese. Situated in the Gràcia neighbourhood of the city Can Luc offers customers much more than just cheese however; a selection of wines, patés, chutney, marmalades, sauces, fondues, raclettes and other equipment (for sale and to borrow) and most importantly of all the personal assessment provided by Luc himself.

Luc is a born communicator and his enthusiasm for cheese is contagious as well as the fact that his knowledge is encyclopaedic. In fact it’s no surprise that Luc worked in marketing for several years before realising his dream of opening a cheese shop and sharing his knowledge with a general public. This native of France has been living in Barcelona for 15 years and everything on sale at Can Luc is personally chosen by him, hence his in-depth knowledge of the products. His guiding philosophy and that of Can Luc is to offer the best quality cheeses possible to the Barcelona cheese eating public.

Can Luc offers a mixture of French and Spanish cheeses with some surprises sourced from other European countries. Mostly artisan cheese but with some exceptions, everything from an excellent Comte cured over 18 months, one of the most popular with his clients, to a range of artisan cheeses from Val de Meranges (Cerdanya). Or his selection of superior-quality Swiss cheeses, perfect for fondue evenings (Etivaz, Sbrinz o Vully) and the odd surprise like the Gjetost, a highly unusual sweet Norweigan cheese.

An entire meal based on cheese is another possibility, one that Luc is happy to advise on, “Dining exclusively on cheese is not only a distinct possibility but in fact a simple and delicious option. Just to name six cheeses, three soft ones and another three hard ones: two goat’s cheese, two cow’s cheese ad two sheep’s cheese,” explains Luc. All of which can be paired with wines chosen with the very same expert criteria.
