Chamako

Mexican Asian fusion

By Brian Gallagher 19.04.23

A new gastronomic proposal in Barcelona’s Poblesec neighbourhood offering urban Mexican food combined with Asian cuisine techniques and ingredients.¡

The Chamako experience combines food and entertainment, whether it be lunch or dinner, brunch or cocktails during the wee hours. There’s a playful approach to cooking, presentation and serving. This recently rebranded restaurant (formerly Sasha) has a buzz that is organised around its imaginative cuisine. Serving a range of Mexican, South American and Asian inspired dishes, paired with a playful cocktail and beer menu. The restaurant is located in Poblesec catering to a lively crowd.  All the dishes and the décor including the waiters’ uniforms are inspired by a fictional character, Miguelito who grew up in Tijuana before setting off across the globe.

The restaurant is the brainchild of Leo Chechelnitskiy, his third project in Barcelona, and already an unstoppable force on the gastronomic scene here. Chamanko is a total restaurant experience and includes food and cocktails, with tequila and mezcal providing the main inspiration.

Among the stand-out dishes is the Chamako guacamole, not only homemade but prepared as a performance in front of diners. The native-born Mexican chef brings all the different ingredient options directly to the table and clients decide how they prefer it, with or without cilantro, lime, seasonings etc.

Starters and tapas include seafood delicacies such as Oysters, Ceviches and Tiraditos (such as the Chamako ceviche, with prawns with leche de tigre and passion fruit). The main dishes feature the classics of Asian and Mexican cuisine: Baos, Gyozas and edamame (one of the most celebrated is the Langoschino, a prawn hakao with soy mayo), Nachos, a selection of 6 surprising combinations. A selection of tacos and tortillas, up to 7 options; Harakiri (Tokyo-style steak tartare) or Espar-Taco (low-temperature Iberian secreto with tzatziki sauce).
