Casa Xica

Catalan-Asian Cuisine

25.07.24

Surrounded by the theatres and other cultural institutions of Poblesec Casa Xica is a restaurant that brings two seemingly contrasting cuisines together. The mixture of Catalan and Asian techniques and ingredients is unique in Barcelona, and the setting is also uniquely charming and intimate, like dining with friends in their home. Raquel Blasco and Marc Santamaria, the chefs and owners of Casa Xica celebrate the restaurant’s 10-year anniversary this year with a cookbook publication and a special tasting menu.

Every restaurant has a story behind it, a dream that inspired it in the first place. Casa Xica has one of the more fascinating, and exotic backstories. Both chefs started their careers in London, later moving to Shanghai where they eventually managed three different restaurants. Asian cuisine is their passion, but Barcelona is their home. So, in 2014 they embarked on the adventure of Casa Xica when they returned to their roots. Originally described as Catalan Asian fusion but now the dishes served at Casa Xica are more accurately described as a mixed cuisine, accompanied by a special collection of natural wines and other drinks.

Selecting the dishes for the book and tasting menu was not easy. To choose the 10 recipes, therefore, they were guided by both memories and emotions: it includes the iconic Green soy, red shrimp and tobiko noodles that have been on the menu since the beginning to the Double-fermented homemade Bao with oxtail, not forgetting the surprising Pil-Pil monkfish head with rice pasta or the Squid tartare served with coconut and lime ajoblanco, undisputed favourites. Also included is an original recipe, Infinite noodles, an adaptation of a dish that the chefs tried at a street snack bar in Hangzhou with extra-long noodles, inspired by the Chinese tradition to wish longevity and prosperity in the years to come.
