Casa Luz, Tomás Abellán

Winter light, winter fare

By Brian Gallagher 11.12.21

With its crow’s nest location overlooking Plaza Universidad from the eastern corner, Casa Luz is well named. This roof top terrace with a restaurant attached is actually part of the eponymous hotel, recently opened in Barcelona. The entrance is from Ronda Universidad which adds to the special sense of being somewhere clandestine, a lift brings diners to the 6th floor where two stunning terraces and a warm, cabin like interior accommodate the latest restaurant from Tomás Abellán.

Decorated by Lázaro Rosa Violán the space is cozy and inviting, the two terraces at either end act as book ends. They are raised to provide optimum views of the domes and spires that surround the sky-scape of this neighbourhood, which generally don’t get to be seen this close. Following along the same lines as his other restaurants Casa Luz served food for sharing. The menu is inspired by simple ingredients that are seasonal, healthy and absolutely delicious. The menu is loosely divided into starters, first and second courses as well as desserts, in reality all dishes are designed for sharing. Between tow people between 5 and 6 dishes and then dessert would be typical.

The atmosphere is greatly helped by the interior design, which manages to get the acoustics and the lighting just right.
