Casa Ángela
Homemade & traditional cuisine at the Sagrada Familia
Entering Casa Ángela feels like coming home, or being invited into a friend’s living room to share a meal. This impression is continued with the home made food served there, traditional and simple tapas that are expertly prepared. Sometime the simplest dishes can be the most difficult to get right, and at Casa Angela they know what they do best. Among the house specialities are included the croquettes (made with a special type of breadcrumb), the Russian Salad etc. familiar dishes with rich flavours. The friendly service contributes to the overall atmosphere of bonhomie and home.
There are in fact two Casa Ángelas, one just a few doors from the other, No.s 13 and 15 both facing the Plaza de la Sagrada Familia. The waiters run between one and the other. No. 13 is decorated more like a bar, with a typical neighbourhood bar counter, while No. 15 is a restaurant with soft lighting and comfortable seats. Sagrada Familia is perhaps a neighbourhood not renowned for its gastronomy but nevertheless a place where the classic tapas are appreciated and celebrated by restaurants and bars with a long tradition. As the construction on the infamous basilica nears completion the barrio is changing. The fast food restaurants and tourists are still there but so too are the classic and traditional neighbourhood bars and restaurants.

Founded originally in 1947 (then known as La Palmera) Casa Ángela changed its management and name two years, named after a real person, Ángela for many years was the heart of soul of the restaurant. Nowadays managed by Manel Forés the ambience is still that of a family run establishment.

The rice dishes are another of the highlights at Casa Ángela, there are seven to choose from, including; the Marinera, with squid, clams, prawns and artichokes; Octopus with mussels, sweet paprika from La Vera and allioli; and Campero, with Calaf butifarra and wild asparagus.

The dessert menu is short and tempting with Cheesecake, Chocolate Coulant and Crème Caramel among other options. The wine and drinks selection also includes references that belong to a simple tapas restaurant, but it is the food that will be the reason you’ll be coming back to Casa Ángela. Reasonable and tasty, like a good neighbourhood restaurant should be.
