Caballa Canalla
Cuisine with character
Of all Barcelona’s neighbourhoods there is something unique and magical about entering the peninsula of narrow streets and sea breezes that characterises La Barceloneta. For local non-residents and visitors alike a visit here represents an excursion into a different world, a world that belongs to the port and the sea, the Mediterranean makes its presence felt around every corner. Caballa Canalla is a restaurant located at its very heart, within the Barceloneta food market building.
Caballa Canalla is the joint project conceived by two entrepreneurs, mother and son, Isabel Galobardes and Guillem Rofes, a trained chef who studied his craft at the Hofmann School in Barcelona amongst other places. The menu he has created at Caballa Canalla is characterised by traditional Catalan cuisine, familiar dishes but which have been modified slightly or adapted to more modern tastes. The location next to the market is the guarantee that all the ingredients are fresh and wholesome.

Having opened over a year ago (in the previous establishment that accommodated the renowned Fogones) Caballa Canalla is organised over two levels the ground floor has a direct view over the market with the upper level accommodated under its deconstructed vaults. There are two private areas here that can be reserved for groups. Outside a sun drenched terrace takes advantage of one of the few open spaces within the labyrinthine neighbourhood making it a great option for lunch reinforced by its lunch time set menu. Also a great option for vermouth and tapas.

The regularly updated includes a wide variety of caldos (stew type dishes) and as one would expect great seafood options, among the highlights is the Grilled squid stuffed with butifarra (local sausage), surf and turf sauce and romesco as well as the Catalan cannelloni with truffle and mushrooms. Established favourites are maintained, amongst which are the house-specials: cod served with fresh spinach, sofrito (a seasoned onion, tomato and coriander sauce) and soft garlic mousseline; and low temperature cochifrito (traditional lamb or goat’s meat dish) with creamy mashed potatoes and gravy.
