The season of the open air terraces is with us once again, the best are undoubtedly to be found on the roofs of the city’s hotels, whether in the Eixample, the Port, the Old City or the Raval. Not only are the views jaw dropping many also have special culinary offerings, cocktail bars as well as live entertainment laid on for the general public to enjoy. Here we present our top top 12 for the coming summer season. Some are completely new and some are well known and loved already, each has something uniquely magical about it.

#1. El Terrat
Designed by architect Patricia Urquiola El Terrat is part of the overall expansion of the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona,El Terrat offers incredible 360° degree views over the city. This multifaceted rooftop terrace has two distinct characters depending on the time of day or night. The special menu includes Nikkei options as well as cocktails like the Bellinis or classic Mojitos. Open to the public from 6 in the afternoon till 2 in the morning during the summer months. Food served till 11 PM.

#2. Sky Bar
Located on the roof of Barcelona’s Grand Hotel Central on Via Laietana this terrace has truly exceptional panoramic views over the old city, the Mediterranean and just about everything else. Equipped with an infinity pool (lit from below), terrace seating over various levels, a DJ and impressive sound system the terrace is open to the general public daily from 8.30 pm through 0.30.

#3. La Terraza del Omm
Situated on the corner of Passeig de Gràcia with Rosselló the Hotel Omm’s roof terrace faces directly over the sculptural roof of La Pedrera, Gaudi’s seminal architectural masterpiece. The terrace is or organised linearly with a central cocktail bar at its heart under a tall timber pergola with a pool at one extremity and an ample sitting area at the other. Open to the general public from 7pm to 1am this is one of the most welcoming terraces in the city centre and its location makes it the ideal spot to start off Barcelona nights enjoying a cocktail or their Sushi bar (open from 8 PM).

#4. 360º
Terrace located on the 11th floor of the Barceló Raval hotel offering 360º panoramic views of the city, the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Equipped with a plunge pool, cocktail bar and 360º views the elliptical floor plate with glass balustrade provides the perfect platform for appreciating Barcelona by day or by night. Serving cocktails and drinks the bar remains open till 1.30 am daily.

#5. La Dolce Vitae
The world renowned Majestic is one of the city’s premier hotels. The newly terrace is open to the public from 9 AM through till 2 AM during summer. The design created by Antonio Obrador recalls an outdoor room with tables, chairs and lounge seating organised around a pool surrounded by colourful murals created by artist Philip Stanton, spectacular panoramic vistas of the city and infinite skies.

#6. La Terraza del Claris
One of the very first hotel roof top terraces in the city to open to the general public and still one of the very best places to experience magical Barcelona summer evenings. Located on the top floor of the Hotel Claris within one of the most elegant areas of the Eixample. Organised around the entire perimeter of the hotel this is one of the tallest buildings in the area and therefore the views are uninterrupted, there is a swimming pool, cocktail bar, a generous seating area with numerous corners for more intimate encounters and a marvellous semicovered dining area.

#7). ohla Chill-Out Terrace
Located on the top floor of the Ohla Hotel renowned for its design and gastronomy (Saüc restaurant directed by Xavier Frnaco which possesses a Michelin star) the terrace is equally spectacular with its privileged views over the casco antiguo (the old city) and the Eixample. The terrace has a glass fronted plunge pool with underwater lighting feature, comfortable sofas with canopies and a cocktail bar with a special food and cocktail menu designed specially for Ohla.

#8. AlmaBarcelona
Designed by the Coriumcasa design studio (Nori Furlan and Paco Llonch) who also authored the hotel interiors the recently opened roof terrace is an exercise in refined and sophisticated minimalism. The terrace situated on the seventh floor of the hotel is open to the general public every day from 19.00 till 1.00 and serves cocktails, drinks and ‘pinchos’ (finger food).

#9. Roba Estesa
Titled ‘Roba Estesa’ which in Catalan means clothes hanging out to dry, located in Barcelona’s most charming square Sant Felip Neri and the only hotel in the city listed by Relais & Châteaux. The terrace is open to the general public from noon till midnight during the week and later (2 AM or 3 AM depending on how busy it is) at the weekends. There is a cocktail bar and a special snack menu for customers to enjoy.

#10. Alaire, Ramblas
The rooftop terrace of this extraordinary hotel refurbished by renowned architect Domènech i Montaner at the beginning of the 20th C is definitely worth investigating. With its surreal style terrace furniture, art works and views over the Raval. Live music, cocktails and a ‘chill out’ zone situated literally a few meters away from the Ramblas.

#11. BLACK MARINA
The new rooftop terrace of the Eurostars Grand Marina hotel, located adjacent to the World Trade Centre in Barcelona’s port is the only terrace which offers panoramic views of both the city and the Mediterranean Sea. The ‘Terrassa 83,3’ terrace is located on the rooftop of the Royal Hotel Passeig de Gràcia Barcelona within an emblematic building right at the heart of Barcelona, the former headquarters of the Banca Catalana. Equipped with a bar serving cocktails and drinks the terrace has exceptional views over the city centre.
