The past year has witnessed a surge of new venues offering cutting edge and classic cocktails served in sophisticated settings by world class bartenders. Putting them all together we begin to get a picture of what it’s like to enjoy a cocktail in the ever evolving Barcelona of 2012. Sociable, informative, relaxed - this is how drinking alcohol should be!

A collection of new cocktail bars recently opened in Barcelona city centre where the creative mixology is matched by the décor and ambience. A total of eight venues that stand out both in terms of originality and quality; Ohla Boutique Bar, located within the Ohla Hotel on Via. Laietana; Bocachica on the upper floors over Bocagrande (restaurant on Passatge Concepció); La Martinera (eixample izquierda); Bobby Gin (Gràcia); Rien de Rien, located within the basement of the Palace Hotel Barcelona; 41º (twinned with Tickets on Avinguda del Paralel); Ornina (Les Corts) and Banker’s Bar within the renowned Mandarin Oriental Hotel (Passeig de Gràcia). The article includes interviews and reviews of the creative forces behind the bar counters and considers what makes a successful cocktail bar and why Barcelona is currently experiencing a new golden age of the cocktail.
