Bar Maracaibo La Barceloneta

Finger food, beer, ice-cream & terrace!

By Brian Gallagher 31.08.20

The old adage in the world of Real Estate regarding the most important thing about a property emphasises location, location, location – and today in Barcelona the same could be said for restaurants. Bar Maracaibo has undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary locations of any bar / restaurant in the city, equidistant between the Born, the Gótico, Port Vell and La Barceloneta – right next to the famous Correos building at the foot of the Lichtenstein sculpture, La Cara de Barcelona. This knuckle of streets round Pas de Sota Muralla in recent years has become a foodie’s paradise, with lots of different new ethnic and speciality options, not forgetting the traditional and gastronomic restaurants that have been in this neighbourhood over the years.

At Bar Maracaibo the culinary offering is informal, food that can be eaten with the hands; a variety of sandwiches, burgers and the spectacular fish n’chips. Wholesome, tasty but simple food, just the type of sustenance your stomach craves after a day sunbathing at the beach, or a walk along the Paseo Maritimo, or just sightseeing around the Port / Born. The food offering is matched by that other staple of the terrace, beer! The section includes popular largers, six different varieties on tap, unfiltered ones (like Aguila) as well as craft beers like IPA Montseny (in bottles). The bottle and draught beer selection will be updated on a regular basis.

Starters include local favourites like the ham croquettes, the excellent bravas or the squid Andalusian style, accompanied by chicken fingers with kimchi sauce, chicken gyozas, rib buns or lacquered chicken wings. The main attraction at Bar Maracaiba is the selection of sandwich, or the entrepanes (open sandwiches): six different options that pay tribute to the beaches along the coast that La Barceloneta and Poblenou share (Barceloneta, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Somorrostro, Sant Sebastià and Llevant).

Nowadays more than ever having a terrace is key to the success for any restaurant or bar. Bar Maracaibo is in reality more a terrace than an interior space, although there are tables indoors, with its canopies, a Dj and comfortable seating it feels more indoors than outdoors. The views of course are spectacular, and the sensation of being in the centre of everything is palpable. Day and night this is literally the epicentre of Barcelona’s Port Vell.

The Sant Sebastià (meatballs, crispy fried onion, mushroom sauce, alfalfa sprouts and rock'n'roll sauce) or the Barceloneta (open veal sandwich with Maldonado Iberico bacon, crispy fried onion, cheddar cheese and cherry tomato confit) are among the most popular; not forgetting the seafood options like the  Llevant, a new revised version of the famous squid sandwich. Treated with the same reference as the ingredients, the choice of bread is everything, baked by renowned Balboa artisan bakery in La Barceloneta, following the specific indications of the Maracaibo team.

Maracaibo is the brain-child of Oriol Fàbregas, who is well known in culinary circles for coming up with the concept for Bar But in Gràcia (he is also the owner), an authentic and original place to eat where the food is also informal, of excellent quality and is also focused on finger food.
