By Brian Gallagher 24.10.21

Gastronomy at its best offers an opportunity to discover, to be surprised, to challenge our preconceptions, to be seduced. This is precisely what the recently opened restaurant Bar Bar manages to do, through its offering of sophisticated Indian cuisine. Relatively unknown compared to other cuisines in Barcelona the backers choose the city precisely because they consider it to be a world renowned centre of culinary excellence. Kartik Aggarwal, Shilpi Kashyap and chef Nikhil Mahale are the three figures behind the project, their mission is to present Barcelona with a broader vision of Indian cuisine. Located right in the heart of the Eixample neighbourhood Bar Bar represents an important addition to Barcelona’s culinary scene.

Bar Bar offers high end gastronomic food at very affordable prices within a simple setting where the all the focus is on the food. For anyone even slightly curious about Indian food this is a great place to start, a chance to savour authentic Indian dishes without leaving the city. Chef Mahale, originally from Mumbai, has been living in London for the last 12 years and always worked in the hospitality sector. He is the ideal ambassador for Indian cuisine, restless, inventive and also contagious in his enthusiasm. Having worked in gastronomic Italian and French restaurants and more recently at the Giraffe group of London.

At Bar Bar the menu has been designed to include a rich and varied culinary offering, one that has been passed down through the generations. A clear demonstration of the different cuisines that represent the 29 different states of India that includes faithful traditional dishes as well as more original ones. Indian cuisine is local, authentic km0 because each state has built its recipe book with the ingredients and products available. For example, in the south there are several different regional cuisines: in Bangalore buffalo and rabbit are popular while in Chennai, the neighbouring state, the population is vegetarian because of the Brahmin religion. The state of Goa, in the southeast, features English, Portuguese and Russian influences where meat dishes are more popular. In fact, Goa is the only place where it is legal to eat beef, because it’s prohibited in the rest of the country.
