Auto Rosellón

Neighbourhood deli and bistro

By Brian Gallagher 21.08.19

The chaflans (chamfers) of Barcelona’s Eixample urban grid layout function like town squares for their neighbourhoods and make ideal locations for restaurants and their terraces. With extra day light and open street views these corners are a phenomenon spread across the city. One of which at the intersection of Enric Granados with the eponymous Rosellón accommodates Auto Rosellón, previously an auto-repair shop selling spare parts and now a Casa de Comidas (roughly translated as a bistro crossed with a delicatessen). The terrace is easily recognised with its distinctive cane furniture directly outside overlooking the chaflán.

Operating from 8 am through till midnight from Monday through Sunday Auto Rosellón marks the different stages of the day with its food offering that includes breakfast, brunch, lunch (with a mid-week set-lunch menu) and dinner. Not forgetting the selection of cocktails and vermouth as well as its coffee bar with home made cakes which even has its own hatch in the wall. Auto Rosellón serves a premium coffee using grounds of 100% Colombian mountain coffee prepared freshly using a Marzocco machine.

The interior is more like a country pantry than a restaurant with different style tables and chairs pushed together between an open plan kitchen and a coffee bar. At the centre of all is Ronit Stern self-taught chef who presides over everything, from the selection of the produce, its preparation and even serving the food. “I am a real fan of gastronomy, it’s what I live for. Trying out new restaurants, and new flavours and sourcing the best products when they are at their best. This dedication to the cause has given me a strong criteria,” explains Ronit.

This attention to detail is obvious in the dishes, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Asian influenced options prepared using the freshest of local produce. The menu at Auto Rosellló changes every month with a tasting menu also. Dishes such as the cream of organically grown artichokes, toasted hazlenuts, poached egg and dokkah (crushed dried spices, herbs and nuts); Roast beef torrada (on bread) with caramelised onion, with remolaude sauce; Pork ribs, plum barbecue sauce, multi-coloured organic carrot salad; or the Roman Ñokis, spicy gorgonzola and caramel tomatoes. All with clearly listed ingredients for anyone with allergies or food intolerances.
