Art-te

Barcelona's concept-bistrot

By Brian Gallagher 22.09.14

Artte is a new multi-disciplinary space in Barcelona, a ‘concept’ bistrot with a cross-cultural offering predicated on bringing together the five senses. Although situated slightly ‘off the beaten track’ located at Muntaner 83 (between C/ Valencia and C/ Aragó) Artte is without doubt worth seeking out, this is a highly ambitious project founded by its art loving owner and a fine new addition to local eateries/performance spaces in the city.

Artte is a restaurant or to be more correct a bistrot. The space is divided into four discreet sections which reflect the various offerings, at the entrance area which is completely open to the street there is an art gallery space; where up-and-coming artists have a three dimensional canvas to carry out their work, between the street and the restaurant proper a delicatessen specialising in teas, and finally at the rear of the space a bistrot-tea room with a performance area with a packed programme of jazz, soul, lyric and classical music as well as dance and mini-theatrical events.

Designed by ubiquitous interior designer of the moment Lázaro Rosa-Violán featuring his signature cozy / industrial approach the main space is provided with abundant natural light via numerous rooflights. The colour scheme is mostly white meaning that despite its location at the centre of the city block during the day this is a surprisingly cheery and inviting character. Leather ‘chesterfileds’ and lounge seating combined with free standing tables make for a pleasant space to dine or have a cocktail while enjoying the music. The four and a half meter high ceilings are typical of the area but here provide the acoustics for the changing musical programme that can be consulted on Artte’s webpage and social media taking place mostly during the weekends and evenings.

One of the most interesting aspects of Artte and which has inspired the entire project is the Lab space which is located within an entirely open space at the entrance almost like a smoking zone, half inside half outside. Here young emerging artists are given the chance to express themselves whether it be the visual arts, musicians, dancers or photographers on a continually revolving programme.
