Ándele, #04

Long live Mexican cuisine!

20.02.23

It’s generally acknowledged that Mexico has one of the most diverse, fascinating and tasty cuisines in the world. That’s why some years ago it was awarded World Heritage Status some years ago by UNESCO. Mexican food has been available in Barcelona over several decades and is an established favourite, appealing to a broad base thanks to its extra-ordinary diversity. Among the most appreciated restaurants is Ándele, now a chain of four, the latest one to open is located in the Gracia neighbourhood (the others are in Sant Gervasi - Galvany, Eixample and L'Illa Shopping Centre). It’s a great a wonderful place to discover why Mexican food is world renowned and has so many local fans.

Ándele is now on its second generation, the same founding family, Lorenzo and Marta Rodríguez-Sans are handing over the reins to Edgar and Laura. Their first Mexican restaurant venture to open in Barcelona dates from 1999 when Tex-Mex was all the rage. Now, even though the food offering has evolved its secret remains unchanged. The home cooking inspiration behind every dish, and the continuity of staff from over 23 years.

The Ándele menu brings the best-known traditional recipes like the tacos al pastor (marinated pork, onion and pineapple), cochinita pibil (in Mayan marinade, with pickled red onion and black beans), sea bass aguachile or enchiladas and other little know dishes here such as the chiles en nogada (poblano chili stuffed with meat and fruit, cheese and nut sauce), the callo de hacha (scallop served with lime and chile de árbol sauce), the traditional Tlalpeño broth soup (chicken, chipotle chili, cheese panela, cilantro and lime) or the mezcal beef ribs (about 600g of mezcal roast rib with Oaxacan black mole and tortillas to assemble the tacos), traditional recipes with a twist.

The other reason for visiting Ándele is the cocktails and drinks, with traditional cocktails based on high-quality tequila and mezcal, as well as numerous Caribbean recipes. These drinks are a great alternative to wine for pairing with the Ándele cuisine. There is also a wide variety of beers to pair with the dishes, this year, in addition, Corazón is added to the selection of imported beers, a lager beer created by the Rodríguez-Sans family to fund charitable projects in Barcelona.
