For wine enthusiasts and anyone looking for a get-away within easy reach of Barcelona visiting the Terra Dominicata hotel within the Priorat region is an unforgettable experience, for a number of reasons. Located in the bucolic setting of the Parc Natural de la Serra de Montsant, where every view is straight from a romantic landscape painting. The very specific nature of the land here, with its rich slate substrate, together with its unusual microclimate is the reason behind the quiet revolution that has been going on here over the last 30 years which has seen the elevation of Priorat as one of the most highly respected wine producing areas of the world.
The hotel is located on a 135 hectares estate, with 26 rooms, a winery, a gastronomic restaurant, outdoor pool and terrace and numerous walks and cycle paths connecting to the surrounding villages, one more charming than the next. The original building was a Masía (Catalan style country house) which has been extended but still retains the feel of a country house. The architecture is beautifully integrated within the surrounding landscape, the earthy colour of the very walls recalls the Montsant mountain range. Even the parking area and approach road are manicured perfectly, a seamless extension of how the planting and the combination of new and old together blend with the setting, enhancing nature rather than detracting from it. The hotel’s interior design evokes warmth and comfort, the rooms don’t have TVs because the idea here is to disconnect. The dining room / breakfast room looks over a planted terrace with a choice of areas to relax and contemplate the day.

The hotel has a gastronomic restaurant, Alma Mater led by chef Mattia Turchet. The cuisine reflects the Priorat region, its local gourmet produce and dishes that are typical of the area both in terms of the evening menu and the breakfast options. With almost three hundred references of Priorat and Montsant wines, Alma Mater provides guests the chance to sample most of the wines produced in the area. The restaurant’s sommelier will be happy to give background information and recommendations about all of the wines and there is a cocktail barman also on hand for an aperitif or after-dinner ‘one-for-the-road’. And guests can join the daily tasting sessions offered at the winery, either morning or evening.

Terra Dominicata is a young winery that produces two wines; DOQ Priorat, Domus Aquilae and Sui Generis are made from the estate’s own grape production within its 15 hectares of vineyard integrated within the property.
