Nippon-Koku
Dance, set and costume design
The National Dance Company (Compañía Nacional de Danza, CND) under the artistic direction of José Carlos Martínez presents a new work Nippon-Koku at the Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona, a piece conceived by Marcos Morau who founded the La Veronal dance company back in 2005 and who is renowned in the world of dance.
Inspired by the militaristic past of the pre-World War Japanese Empire Nippon-Koku aims to promote the art of dance in its most powerful forms, reflecting CND’s goal of bringing its repertoire to a broader cultural and popular audience including all its disciplines, from classical ballet to more contemporary choreographic expressions.

The work is focused on a group of army officers in a fictitious location where civilization as we know it no longer exists, where there is no one to command anymore. Without any civilians to take hostage or subjugate there can be no combat, the war scenario takes on an unreal atmosphere of scepticism. The end result suggests a neutralization of the idea of "role", calling into question who we are and what we understand by society and authority ...

The staging features an unusual distribution and use of space together with experimental choreography and costumes. Costume designer David Delfín has combined military motifs with the fluid movement of the dancers to reinforce the underlying themes.
