Josep Xortó
Stand up Against Heart Crime
We recently had the chance to interview the lead singer of the Barcelona band ‘Stand Up Against Heart Crime’, Josep Xorto. This young Catalan native experiences his music from a very unique perspective translating his most intimate secrets into dance tracks, filled with contradictions but with a musical foundation rich in texture. The group has a busy schedule over the coming months: warm up act for Sebastian Tellier, Primavera Club and a mini tour to London. All the group members participate directly with the organization of several parties in Barcelona’s best known clubs, making for a badly needed musical urban guerrilla outfit with attitude.
Who inspired the emotional blackmail that provoked Stand Up...?
The values forced on us by society with their religious overtures. What one expects and what one finds. The search for perfection in the simple. Self-deception.
My music comes from …
… from long periods of silence, from feelings, I always have this image of someone in a river singing. An older woman.
My music is not…
… nothing, I’m more interested in sharing a sensation, not playing sound in a vacum.
My music is heading…
…more towards dance territory, melancholy should be banned.
Can you describe each of the band’s members using one or two adjectives?
Borja V Conde: ugly, strong, formal.
Jordi Moraleda: skinny, precise, scattered, restless, discreet, anaerobic.
Adex Izquierdo: primal, unstable, hyper-sensitive.
Arnau Obiols: perseverant, blessed, enthusiastic.
How can such a personal project be equally adopted by the other members of the group?
This project started as being very personal because at the start we didn’t live near one another. Before Stand Up came out, some of us were already playing with other bands. So in reality I owe it all to them.
The Loewe commercial video caused a lot of controversy, directed by Luis Venegas and filmed by Daniel Riera which you also took part in. The thing I remember most was a TV programme with poll: 'which of the Loewe’s ad kids you hate the most?'... What are your thoughts on programmes like that?
The national press does not impress me, it’s incredible, it was funny to be suddenly considered rich, I still haven’t figured out who my really famous relation is supposed to be. And even reading about the things connected with the whole debate, like the state of the nation or Africans selling bags and making them out to be the baddies. Not only in the press but also the gossipy magazines which didn’t even get the names in the photos right. Pathetic. They can come around to my castle anytime, I’d invite them in to see my day to day life. They know nothing about me, how I’m getting on or whether I’m dying of cancer or not. The things they focus on are not even interesting ... I would have loved to top that poll! My lyrics were a hit and I still think so.
This all started in London, do you have any specific plans for the upcoming London tour?
There will be no surprises, we will be performing new material however, songs that we have not played live before. The whole thing is kind of 'kraut' rock like, using arps synthesiser.
What was it like playing your first Sónar?
Really great, the Sónar team are sound, we forgot a piece of kit in our dressing room and they returned it three days later in perfect shape. We owe them one.
Which musician that you have seen perform live has impressed you most and why?
I’d say MartinTomlinson from Selfish Cunt as an authentic performer and I’d say Jarvis as a genuine 'crooner'.
What is your first musical memory?
A gralla, a timbaler (type of drum), a village band, a local festival. Pasodobles... Umpah-Pah’s Adrià Puntí... A bit all over the place.
Do you think that people are getting sufficiently high at your concerts?
I think that intoxication alters people’s conscious, it’s not up to me to judge. But I will say that even back in 1992 society in general was hooked.
How powerful is the ability of music to hypnotise?
I think people are a bit hypocritical in this sense, I only have one friend who tells it like it is. Hypnosis is related to repetition. Repetition is mechanical and the machine is superficial, but at the same time it doesn’t need to be otherwise.
What is your definition of art?
In my opinion it’s the expression of emotion which I think is not really necessary, I am a fan of Spock and a bit of a pessimist.
