Honey Dijon in Brunch-In The City

Queer house music for the masses

By Sergio Pulido 08.05.19

House music came into the world black and gay in the Chicago of the mid-80s. Frankie Knuckles played his disco classics and created hymns like "Your Love" as a resident of The Warehouse, the famous underground club for black queer people that gave name to that new style of dance music. From there it moved to New York, stopped in Ibiza, and established itself as Acid House in the London underground scene and from there to the world's mainstream. Honey Redmon's story is similar, better known as Miss Honey Dijon. This brave black transsexual woman was born in Chicago, trained as a DJ in New York, and today is a superstar in nightclubs around the world. She is also a producer, composer, has appeared in campaigns as a model, and is one of the great references of trans visibility in the world today.

She talks about herself on her Instagram account that when she moved to New York City, she met the legend Danny Tenaglia who gave her her first mixer, Ted Patterson taught her the secrets of beat mixing, and that she recorded her sets at Gant Johnson's house. All this while she was looking for work, settled in the big city, and began her hormonal treatment to become what she always wanted to be. A lot of water has run under the bridge since then, and today she is a complete artist who knows all the secrets of house music and its influences and derivatives, she is a key figure in any specialised festival that's worth knowing abouts, and her sets are an energetic trip through yesterday and today mixing her own productions, remixes of others and great classics of yesterday. She has made her queerness become mainstream, she has left the ghetto and its scene, all through her simple but extraordinary approach and expert technique, good music and its power to transform. A must see.
