Gay and Lesbian Cinema from around the world
FIRE!! starting June 30th and running till July 10th , this year the film festival will be celebrating its 21st edition. The original motivation behind the festival was to promote the rights and equality of the LGBTI community but nowadays it also provides a showcase for independent cinema and LGBTI themes from around the world. This year the screenings will also be taking place in other parts of Catalonia (Olot and Terrassa) as well as a multitude of screens within the city of Barcelona, although the main venue continues to be the Institut Francés on C/ de Moiá, 8 (just off Tuset at the intersection with Diagonal).
The festival shows LGBTI films from around the world and includes some notable local documentary features. Feature films from Chile, Lithuania, Japan, Sweden, Kenya, México, the United States, Austria, the Philippines, as well as Spain. This year, FIRE!! is putting its spotlight on women, the inaugural film is La Belle Saison, from France. The story is based in the 1970s during the period of the student revolts in Paris. Delphine is the daughter of farm workers based in the countryside but yearns for something more. She runs off to Paris and meets Carole, a feminist activist.

Stories of Our Lives, a documentary from Kenya with five narratives following true stories in a country where homophobia is a normal part of life. The footage is all in black and white, and focuses on love, sex, rejection, betrayal, dreams and hopes for the future.

What's Between Us is a Swiss film that focuses on the "perfect family". Alice and Frank are the parents of a family to have just moved with their children to the countryside. Alice soon begins to feel isolated and she discovers that her husband is developing feelings for men. Alice must decide whether she wants to break up her family, or whether she should fight through this challenge.

Hockney is a film from the United Kingdom that focuses on David Hockney's personal archive of photographs and films. At 77 years old, audiences are presented with a visual diary of this unconventional painter's long life.
