Can Reon Festival

By Silvia Micolau 09.05.23

Can Reon, new artistic and cultural epicenter of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, announces its first festival.

In May 2022, its opening party marked the start of an avantgarde project within a masía (country house) that dates from hundreds of years ago located in Tiana (Barcelona) within the Can Fàbregas estate, now converted into a ‘contemporary wine farm’. The refurbishment works uncovered three new outdoor spaces: L’Era, El Jardí del Tronc and La Pedrera (a natural auditorium), perfect enclaves for hosting concerts, dance, theatre, exhibitions and art installations. This 2023 they have started to produce their own wine, the result of the grape harvest from forgotten vineyards belonging to the D. O. Alella that have also been recovered. And after that, the idea is to open a hotel-restaurant, designed in collaboration with BIG architectural studio, with interior design by Droog.

  • Can Reon aims to bring together local traditions (the ‘Can’ element of the name) and the personal passions of owners Renny and Leon Ramakers (that explains the ‘Reon’ part of the name). Both of Dutch nationality and internationally recognised. Leon, former director of the promoter Mojo Concerts, and influential entrepreneur in the music industry back home. Renny, co-founder in the early 1990s, together with Gijs Bakker, of the Amsterdam-based industrial design studio Droog Design, a revolutionary initiative within the design sector, responsible for innovative ideas such as the iconic Chest of Drawers furniture pieces by Tejo Remy or Tree Trunk Bench by Jurgen Bey: the bench at Can Reon is the only existing one with a double trunk.

  • For the official opening they brought together techno artist Colin Benders (Netherlands, in the picture) and improvising pianist Marco Mezquida (Menorca), and provided a gastronomic experience by Dutch chef Niels van Zijl. Marc Parrot played there on September, at a small format cultural event that included a screening of ‘The Real Time Sweeper’s Clock’ by Maarten Baas. In November, the nearby forest hosted an ornithological song workshop created by biology teacher Pere Alzina. On July 1st, attention!, Brad Mehldau will play.

  • For this upcoming May 27th Can Reon are announcing their first festival (with a limited capacity for up to 300 people) that will feature Carles Viarnès & Alba G. Corral (composer and digital creator), the Miquel Barcelona dance company, performance artist Genevieve Murphy, and Marco Barotti (who is presenting an interactive
soundscape with his Woodpeckers), also including video art works by Cristina Lucas and Marjan Laaper, and illustrations by Jan Rothuizen, among other highlights within an eclectic and exciting programme.

And in Can Reon fashion will include old and new, local and universal, technology and nature. Tickets now on sale!
